U.S.Develops Unmanned Solar Aircraft-based Atmospheric Satellites

Recently, during the Washington International Unmanned Systems (AUVSI) conference and exhibition, the company introduced the solar-powered drones Solara 50 and Solara 60 and positioned it as an atmospheric satellite in the future.

Extreme stamina at high altitudes

Solara 50 is under construction and will be ready next year, while the larger SOLARA 60 will be completed later. They are powered by solar energy and have endurance for weeks or even years at high altitudes.

When it comes to high altitudes, solar drones with extreme endurance will require a lot of skills and expertise. Titan Aerospace believes that Solara has a solid answer to this.

According to relevant regulations, the company has put a smaller concept machine with a 33-foot wingspan into the air for verification in New Mexico, and a longer endurance test is planned. It is scheduled to implement the Solara 50 test next year.

Titan's aircraft will be launched by an aircraft catapult and can land on the bottom skating. This type of aircraft can carry a 70-pound payload at 65,000 feet, cruising at a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour.

Work day and night without weather

According to the company, such aircraft are not affected by the weather and work day and night regardless of day or night. Almost every visible place on its surface has been designed to be filled with thousands of high-efficiency solar cells. A total of about 3,000 solar cells cover the upper surface of the wing, lifts, and tailplanes. The excess energy generated during the day is stored in lithium-ion batteries inside the wings to provide power for night flight.

The battery management system ensures that voltage and thermal thresholds remain below zero degrees Celsius. The Solara 50 has a 164-foot wingspan. The aircraft was designed to fly above 65,000 feet and stay there for a long time. According to some foreign media reports, the aircraft can serve for five years.

Although the Solara 50 has only 70 pounds of payload, the Solara 60 on the next line will carry 250 pounds. The company pointed out that the SOLARA model can carry communications, reconnaissance, atmospheric sensors and other payloads.

Perform similar tasks less expensive than satellites

In order to promote this type of drone that can fly for a long time, the company’s sales information is very simple, clearly stating that in the past, when there was a demand for long-term signal coverage, satellites would meet the requirements of the contract, and the upcoming SOLARA model A similar task will usually be performed at a lower cost than the satellite.

And, according to the company, unlike space satellites, SOLARA machines are easier to maintain. Because it can be returned to the ground for maintenance as needed, or to upgrade the effective load.
