RFID smart card new traffic system is a great success of STMicroelectronics

The world’s first RFID-based reusable one-way bus ticketing system recently launched in Seoul, South Korea. It uses a stable ticketing solution from STMicroelectronics (ST), a global leader in RFID chips. The system is expected to save about 3 billion a year. South Korean won (about 2.4 million U.S. dollars).

The Seoul Metro has been serving the city with a population of 10 million since 1974 and became an important part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s new metro and transit network integration system in July 2004. The new transportation system uses a traffic recharge card system called T-Money, while retaining traditional paper tickets for passengers who buy tickets in cash. Now, in order to save more than 450 million paper tickets per year and the cost of each paper ticket is about 6.8 won, Seoul Subway in South Korea will use an RFID smart card to replace paper tickets with one-way tickets.

In the new system, each passenger only needs to put the fare for the ticket and the 500-won deposit into the ticket vending machine, and the ticket machine will issue a one-way ticket for the smart card to the passenger. Each ticket contains STMicroelectronics' SRT512 non-contact memory chip, which can be recycled and distributed to new passengers. Repurchase of tickets will save operating companies the cost of manufacturing disposable paper tickets and the negative impact on the environment.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government commissioned Korean smart card distributor Korea Smart Card Co., Ltd. (KSCC) to manage the operation of the new transportation system. STMicroelectronics and KSCC established a cooperative relationship to optimize the SRT512 support for the subway ticketing system.

“The support provided by STMicroelectronics has played an important role in ensuring that one-way tickets are launched on schedule, particularly in providing standards-compliant products, technical knowledge and stable sources of supply,” said Kevin C. Moon, Chief Financial Officer of Korea Smart Card Co., Ltd., “New The system is safe and stable, replacing paper tickets and saving staff time, thereby reducing operating costs.”

"Seoul Seoul Transit's RFID smart card single-pass ticket is a huge success for STMicroelectronics because this project proves that our solution can meet the largest and most demanding applications," said STMicroelectronics' RFID and EEPROM product division. Manager Benoit Rodrigues said, “Our RFID solutions are spread all over the world, providing ticketing support for many major events, conferences and infrastructure projects. The Seoul project proves that our products can be used in very large transport systems. We look forward to this project being successful in the future. cornerstone."

The SRT512 is designed for short-range applications that comply with the ISO14443-B standard and require reusable tokens, such as access control systems, exhibition ticketing, and transit ticketing. In order to maintain efficient operation in these applications, the chip has a built-in anti-collision mechanism to prevent the chip from colliding with other cards in the vicinity, and the transaction speed is superior in the similar products. The on-chip computing unit with dual counters and tear-proof features provide a secure and robust solution.

"The characteristics of the SRT512 are the factors that STMicroelectronics has won for this project, enabling us to meet the safety, reliability and rugged requirements of the KSCC and the Seoul Metropolitan Government," added Rodrigues.

STMicroelectronics previously cooperated with KSCC on the T-Money prepaid transportation card project. In addition to being used on public transportation, subways, and taxis, T-Money prepaid transportation can also be used as an electronic wallet to pay for small items in Seoul stores. Based on ST's market-tested ST19WR contactless smart card, the T-Money prepaid card has been widely used in the past two years. The non-contact performance of the ST19WR is excellent, ensuring that the smart card passes through the authentication gateway with high-speed transactions and high throughput to prevent intrusion and falsification.

From RFID memory chips to contactless smart cards, STMicroelectronics has a variety of contactless product portfolios. From single-pass reusable tickets to traffic and micro payment cards, STMicroelectronics offers transportation operators a complete payment solution.
