Luo Baihui: It takes time for robots to move from "manufacturing" to "intellectual creation"

As a factory in the world, a strong manufacturing industry is becoming a market in which all the world's robot giants compete. The latest statistics from the International Federation of Robotics show that in the global industrial robot army last year, robots in Chinese factories accounted for about a quarter. By 2017, the number of industrial robots installed in China will rank first in the world.

The number of workers is halved, and the scale of production is increasing.

In the absence of an increase in production sites and a decrease in the number of production, the domestic TV giant Hisense’s TV production increased from 8 million units in 2011 to 11.1 million units last year, an increase of nearly 40%; 4.4 million units increased to 10 million units last year, an increase of 1.2 times. Much of this is due to the application of automated robots in Hisense's intelligent factory. Take the entire production process of a TV as an example. In the past, 60 to 70 workers were required to complete the entire process, and now nearly 20 % of the process has been replaced by robots, TV test, packaging, locking screws, handling, tearing film, laminating, gluing, labeling, bagging, sorting, binning, unpacking, palletizing, etc. All have been automated. According to data provided by Hisense Group, they currently have 700 robots on various production lines, and will reach 1,000 units by the end of this year.

Not just TV, the air conditioners you use at home may come from the hands of robots. The large number of applications of robots has reduced the number of workers in the US air conditioners by nearly half. Statistics provided by the US show that when the US air conditioner reached a revenue of 50 billion yuan in 2011, the number of workers exceeded 50,000. By 2014, when the total revenue of air-conditioning business was close to 70 billion yuan, the number of workers was reduced to 26,000. According to the plan, by 2018, when the size of the US air conditioner reaches 100 billion yuan, the number of employees will be further reduced to 20,000.

China has become the world's largest industrial robot market

In Shunde, Guangdong, the most important home appliance manufacturing base in China, not long ago, a “China-Germany Industrial Service Area Robot and Intelligent Equipment Enterprise Supply and Demand Matchmaking Meeting” opened in Shundra, and many well-known enterprises from domestic and foreign robots and intelligent equipment took the initiative. Come to this Pearl River Delta manufacturing base to find business opportunities. In the same location, there was also an international project roadshow that attracted many European robot companies that were invited to come. According to the data, among the top five robot giants in the world, Switzerland ABB, Yaskawa, Japan, KUKA, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Japan have entered Shunde through sole proprietorship, joint venture, and cooperation.

The data shows that in 2014, China's robot sales reached 56,000 units, an increase of more than 50%. China has become the world's largest industrial robot market last year, and the Guangdong robot market accounts for about one-third of the country's total. As a factory in the world, a strong manufacturing industry is becoming a market in which all the world's robot giants compete. Statistics from the International Federation of Robotics show that in the global industrial robot army last year, robots in Chinese factories accounted for about a quarter. By 2017, the number of industrial robots installed in China will rank first in the world.

Robots replace people in the short term, it is difficult to reduce costs

However, although robots can replace workers, they can reduce costs, but many companies still encounter various resistances in promotion. First of all, the one-time input cost of the robot is relatively high, and the cost advantage of replacing the labor is difficult to fully manifest in a fiscal year. This will have no small performance report pressure for listed companies. At present, many enterprises have strict input and output regulations for investment projects within a certain period of time. If the cost is more than manual after a certain period of time, it is likely to be rejected by one vote. Therefore, whether the promotion of robots is a pre-existing account or a long-term account does depend to a large extent on the management attitude of the top decision-makers.

Many manufacturers are therefore reluctant to promote robots. According to a high-level enterprise account, “even if it is calculated according to the three-year recovery cost, it is very likely that there will be new technology in the harvest period after three years, and the equipment invested is outdated now.”

In addition, the robot also puts higher technical requirements on the application enterprise in the operation and post-maintenance. In many workshops where robots and workers operate in the same room, the red line around the robot must never be crossed, and workers must follow stricter operating procedures to prevent accidental injury by the robot.

The contradiction between robot and human is difficult to level

At present, many companies face a real headache when promoting robots to replace labor. Even though they know that robots can reduce costs, how to properly dismiss workers has become a problem for enterprises. "This is not just an economic issue, it involves corporate image, social influence and even the relationship with the government!" A household appliance company in Shunde told reporters that this is actually the contradiction between robots and people.

Take the United States as an example. In the past four years, the number of air-conditioning manufacturing workers has dropped by more than 20,000. It is impossible to transfer all the other production lines. A considerable number of workers must be laid off. However, the fact that the workers in the United States have gathered to discuss or complain to the media have also caused great headaches for enterprises. In June last year, Haier CEO Zhang Ruimin’s remarks at the Wharton Global Forum also caused an uproar. He revealed at the time that Haier completed the layoffs of 16,000 in 2013 and plans to lay off another 10,000 in 2014.

It takes time for the robot to go from "manufacturing" to "intellectual creation"

Although many large manufacturing companies in China have begun to change the machine to replace people, Luo Baihui, vice president of the Dongguan Robotics Association, pointed out that it takes time for the robots in China's manufacturing industry to “manufacture” to “intelligence”. It is the symbol of true automated production. "Our current robots are still doing repetitive work, but the future of intelligent robots should be engaged in complex and irregular behavior."

Luo Baihui predicts that in the next 10 years, human beings will basically enter the era of intelligent manufacturing, and the robot industry will also upgrade to intelligent robots. "This means that robots at that time should be able to learn and be able to talk to people. If there is no system support, automation Can't meet the needs of mass customization, so it's not really big to buy robots."
