Swiss researchers create a drone with feathers

Nature's creatures always bring a variety of inspiration to human society. Previously, researchers have been inspired by creatures such as beetles to create drones. According to foreign media reports, researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) Intelligent Systems Laboratory (LIS) have been inspired by birds to create a drone with feathers. The drone has a deformable wingspan that allows it to fly fast, make sharp turns and withstand strong winds, just like birds.

Birds are able to fly so efficiently because they can adjust the shape of their wings. Scientists have developed a deformable wing for aircraft by carefully studying the wings of birds. Now researchers at LIS have found that they can also create a deformable wingspan for drones.

The researchers said that the drone can adjust the shape of its "wings" when flying between obstacles, and can complete sharp turns and withstand the test of strong winds. They built a mechanism that allowed this large artificial feather to be fixed on the wing. These artificial feathers are made of a thin layer of fiberglass and nylon.

The researchers said that when the wing is fully deployed, the drone can perform "fast flight." When it encounters strong winds, it can retract the "wings" and become more streamlined. Researchers say drones can be used in low-altitude urban environments.
