But if the temperature of the battery is too high, the plastic shell will melt and the flame retardant will enter the electrolyte. In laboratory tests, when the temperature reaches above 160 degrees Celsius, the flame retardant is released into the electrolyte. When the scientists tried to ignite the electrolyte in the presence of flame-retardant fibers, the fibers were melted and the flame retardant was released, causing the flame to extinguish after 0.4 seconds.
