Belgium's timber certification share will reach 35% in 2018

According to report, on March 1, 2011, the Belgian Minister of the Environment and several timber industry organizations signed an important agreement to increase the use of responsible timber products.

It is expected that the agreement will increase the market share of certified wood, reaching more than 35% by 2018 and increasing awareness of certification labels. Bart Holvoet, director of FSC Belgium, said that through this agreement, the Belgian timber industry made a clear and concrete commitment to provide timber products from responsible forest management. We believe this will further promote the supply of FSC label products on the Belgian market.

In 2008, the market share of certified timber in Belgium was approximately 15%, of which 7% was FSC-certified timber. In 2007, 13% of imported timber from Belgium came from FSC certified forests, and its market share increased steadily. The output of domestic FSC-certified wood is still relatively low. Through this agreement, the situation will change and the market demand will increase. FSC forest certification has been successfully carried out in the Flanders region. 10% of forests in the region have obtained FSC certification.
